What is the Homeless Shelter Program?
Since 1990, CSDC has managed the local homeless shelter program in cooperation
with a local governmental agency (Community Services and Workforce Development).
The homeless shelter is located on Southside Road in the unincorporated
area of San Benito County. This program serves 30 homeless families annually,
consisting of approximately 56 adults and 80 children. CSDC acts as the
property manager for the homeless shelter by maintaining the housing units
and surrounding grounds. Community Services and Workforce Development
(CSWD), which is a County agency, provides direct services
to families at the homeless shelter that assist the parents to find employment
or gain skills necessary to become employable, to locate and secure permanent
housing, and referral for other needed health and human services from
community based and governmental agencies. Families live in the Shelter
for up to six months.
What types of donations are needed?
We are in need of bedroom and living room furniture, carpet, and vinyl
tiles. The items in most demand include queen size, double, and twin beds,
couches, dressers, chairs, and small kitchen tables with chairs. All furniture
and goods must be in good condition for us to accept as donations. Carpet
and vinyl tiles must be of sufficient quantity to use in the facility.
Normally, carpet must be a minimum of 100 square feet and vinyl tiles
must be sufficient to cover a minimum area of 16 square feet.
Why are these donations needed?
The Homeless Shelter program operates on a limited budget. The donations
help to off-set the costs of the program. The funds saved from in-kind
donations can be used for other aspects of the program for which we cannot
receive donations.
How do I set the value of the donation?
You must set the fair market value of the donation you are making. Please
inform us of this value when making the donation so we can send you a
donation receipt reflecting this amount. We will send a donation receipt
to you within seven days after you make the donation.
How will my donation be used?
Donated furniture and flooring material will be used to replace worn or
damaged goods in the housing units at the Shelter.
How do I arrange for making my donation?
You can contact Jo Ann Schlie
by telephone or email to arrange for your donation. We will set a time
for our staff to pick up your donation.
